If your question is not answered here, e-mail us.  We will respond quickly.

Q Can squirrels chew the feeder and damage it?

A  As soon as the squirrel lands or climbs on the feeder it either gets spun off right away or it is far too busy trying to figure out what happened and how to correct itself from the rotating shell.  Needless to say, they do not have chewing on their minds when on a RollerFeeder or do they stay on long.  Also, the feeder is made of quality metal construction.  All lexan (polycarbonate) materials are protected by steel.

Q How much bird seed does it hold?

A The bird seed container volume is  2 Quarts (approx 3-4 lbs seed) depending on the seed you use.

Q Does birdseed fall out when animals land on it and it spins?

A No. The outer housing that spins is isolated from the internal seed container.  The seed container is firmly bolted to the main support axle and when an animal lands or climbs on the outer shell it spins right away with little to no force on the axle or seed container.  We have tested it by swinging it and spinning it at the same time and the seeds remain in the seed hopper.

Q What construction materials are used and will it rust ?

A All major components are rust proof materials. The feeder is made of durable rigid aluminum, Copper, Stainless Steel, stainless steel hardware, Galvanized Steel, Lexan/Polycarbonate plastic.

How does water drain if rain blows in the feed ports from strong winds?

A The weather roof keeps all regular rain fall out and the majority of rain during strong winds. The bottom of the seed container is perforated with small holes allowing water to drain but keep seed in. The outside shell is also is designed with a water drainage slot.

Q What bird seed should I use?

A We recommend using 100 % Black Oil Sunflower seeds (best overall seed for birds such as Chickadees and other songbirds). You can use the best seed to attract the best birds to your feeder. We do not recommend using inexpensive seed that contains millet , or just safflower, or spiced bird seed. Songbirds will likely search out & favor feeders that contain black oil sunflower seeds, their favorite.

Q Does the seed stay fresh?

A Yes, the bottom of the seed container is perforated for maximum air circulation and seed freshness.

Q Can birds feed from both the bottom & sides of the seed hopper?

A Yes, all the seed gravitates to the seed trays and the side mesh construction allows birds to pick seeds out from the sides, nuthatches and other songbirds like to feed this way.

Q Has the feeder been tested?

A Yes, the feeder has been tested since January 98 (and still ongoing) in several locations, primarily hanging from tree branches. At one test location, the feeder is installed in the middle of a Pine tree with four branches within 6"- 12" inches of the feeder. Many squirrel attempts have been witnessed but none ever gained access to the bird seed.. See Test results page

Q What if seed parts fall between the outer and inner cylinder?

A When birds are feeding, small amounts of seed parts will fall to the bottom of the rotating housing, it is designed this way to help reduce seed shells from dropping to the ground.  Simply rotate shell to remove & discard.

Q Does the RollerFeeder accommodate Cardinals?

A The RF has been tested by a nation-wide bird feeder supply store and past the test for birds chickadee - cardinals in size.  We also receive e-mails often about cardinals using the feeder and have them visit our test feeders on a regular basis.  Keep in mind, the RF is also designed to keep out larger nuisance birds like Starlings and Blackbirds which are very close in size (slightly larger) to a cardinal, so it may take more time for them to adjust to the design compared to small-medium size birds like a chickadee, nuthatch, finch, tufted titmouse, or others. Cardinals have a wider flying pattern/approach whereas small birds can zip in & out of a feeder location.  Make sure it is high enough and some room to maneuver and approach the feeder.

Q Grey Squirrels & Smaller Red Squirrels, Chipmunks, and Larger Raccoons.

A - Hang RollerFeeder anywhere you want to but keep in mind it needs to have some clearance so squirrels are unable to reach over from a stable foothold.  Try to maintain 24" minimum clearance from a pole or branch.  If your area has an over abundance of aggressive squirrels that constantly interrupt and disturb the feeder, we recommend using a simple pole baffle, or hang in a location less accessible, to slow them down. Since squirrels feeding time is similar to birds, this will decrease interruption, reduce wear & tear on the feeder & dramatically increase quality feeding time your songbirds.

Q What should I to expect with squirrels?

A Squirrels will often but not always jump directly on the feeder housing and roll off.  They will also crawl down the hanger, try reaching around, hang from above, or use other acrobatic means and sometimes hang from the side or perch edge.  Squirrels attempt many different methods with all feeders.   If squirrels are hanging on the feeder side, or elsewhere, and closing the feeder housing preventing access to the seed tray/hopper, this is considered normal and working as designed to prevent access to the hopper.  An inexpensive raccoon guard ($1.95) is available that will further discourage them from returning & deter loitering.  The accessory prevents raccoons or 100% the toughest most persistent gray squirrels from investigating the feeder beyond the feeder housing.
